Tale of the Karma Sutra review Pirates of the Carribean: At World's end |
Womb is a fairytale film about loving someone and what you do to keep it alive. It stars Eva Green and Matt Smith and follows their meeting their love its loss and its rebirth. It features cloning, incest ostracism. The film was filmed in a west German North sea coast. This was so it could be a timeless place which they could use to create their own world. The love and ostracism is real and wonderfully managed by Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf. Eva Green is masterful as Rebecca who when given birth to the clone of her former love has to battle with feeling not attended to by Thomas (Matt Smith). This is shown by her doting around him when he is in his twenties also leading to her hugging him and sleeping in his bed. Matt Smith who is also Britain's doctor who shows he can still act the same character and speak the same way but sill be normal and relevant in the film. Matt plays an eco-activist who is an amateur entomologist. He breeds cockroaches and dies on a way to protest against a new spa by getting run over by a car. This film shows Matt Smith as a good actor because the Thomas before the car accident is totally different from the Thomas after. The entomologist Thomas is quiet and reflective but you know he does something. For example he shows Rebecca how he is going to create mass hysteria at the Spa and he shows her his cockroaches. However the reborn Thomas is a idealistic dreamer who has bursts of energy which he uses up by running about and talking about anything that comes into his mind though he does nothing. All you see him in the film is run about, kiss girls and swing on swings. Womb can be seen as a tale of love and what people do to keep it. The entomologist Thomas character keeps it by reflecting on it and silently driving and coveting. This shown by Thomas her his plans of protesting against the new Spa. Young Rebecca rides it and adapts. The film shows it by Rebecca accepting his invitation to learn about his activism and by her deciding to accompany him on his protest fully supporting him and willing to take part in the protest. The reborn Thomas tries to energise it and make it flow. The film shows this by seeing Thomas going into these idealistic rants and then trying to make the girl understand what he is saying, agree to it and then contribute. The older Rebecca tries to enclose and maternal it. This is shown by Rebecca doting around Thomas and hugging him. Or it can be seen as a film showing the journey and life of love. With Rebecca and Thomas meeting at the beach the start. Them sleeping in the same bed and travelling together the growth. The film shows them riding all over place including in the rain. Her leaving to Japan would be the break. Rebecca coming back to find him be the rejuvenating of the love. You see in the film Rebecca put down her bags in her grandfather's house and the first thing she does is goes to Thomas' mother's house and asks where Thomas is. Him being run over could be the death of the love. The film shows start part as a hard time for Rebecca even though it was short. This is conveyed in her stance and her composure which is lifeless showing us she is finding it hard to live with out him. Her giving birth to the clone could be the restart. The film shows her going into the cloning place with a sense of hope and wonder. Womb can also be seen as a film educating you about love. Saying that it can start and end quickly or slowly but after awhile it will start again. It can show you that love can overcome boundaries like ostracism but you have to nurture it. The film shows this by showing Thomas and Rebecca able to live after Thomas' birthday is abandoned by everyone. It also shows them walking to the beach and Rebecca showing them their new house. Womb also focuses on the education of children. It tells you the difference between an independent child and a dependent one. For example the entomologist Thomas is an independent one. The one Rebecca gave birth to was a dependent child. This happened because she covered the truth to her son. This explains the neediness and hugging that child needs. Until she told him the truth and and allowed him to interpret things his own way he could not leave her. When he was told and showed all his old photos. He packed up and left as a man capable of looking after herself. The Rebecca character was selfish in her way of cloning her dead lover and restricted his education, learning and independence by doing so. The film is a fairy tale with a sci-fi twist but is not a relaxing film with a feel good or fairy tale ending. |
