Tale of the Karma Sutra review Pirates of the Carribean: At World's end |
Perfume is adapted from the book of the same name written by Patrick Suskind. Set in 18th century France. Perfume follows the life of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille a sociopath who uses his gifted sense of smell. To go to extradorinary and drastic lengths to create a scent of his own by killing. The film was shot in london but watching the film does making you think it was shot somewhere in france. The film frequently uses vivid images to invoke smells Grenouille detects. The photography is excellent but you should be suprised when your trying to create sense of smell Patrick Suskind would on camera that he would write pages about describing one image or scent. The imagery is so could that when advd version comes out. To really get the feel of the movie you would need a wide screen high definition tv. This shows that Perfume uses the cinema screen masterfully and can be compared to 2001 space Odyssey's use of imagery. Perfumes' plot features the idea that ot make a great perfume you need a set number of base with to mix to form the beginning, middle and the end of the perfume. To mix that you will use 13 different scents. A number used in the film when Grenouille is creating masterful perfume. However in real life this is a simplistic view of how perfume is made and sold to people. As the movie fails to explain the different types of perfume used by perfumers to for different occasions. The movie makes you think there. The other weird thing about the plot is why whenever he leaves his master service whether by force or his will his masters die. This makes the movie comical and if you think that is weird, wait till see the ending. Also anotherf thing that is puzzling is why all the beautiful scents he needs all happen to be beautiful girls. The acting on the other hand is top class and that is understandable when alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman also co-star in it. the character of grenouille is portrayed by Ben Wishaw who plays it show well that even though you know he is a sociopath. You still wonder whether he is driven by madness or his artistic talent to perfect his art. His life horrible from the start. Born in a fishmarket. ONly just saved by curious customer from death by his mother like his other sibling. He is sent to an orphanage. Where you learn that he is heightened sense of smell helps him avoid the apple being thrown at him. Baldwin the down on his luck perfumer is olayed by dustin Hoffman as a comical chaacter and it works beautifully with Wishaw's emotionally uncontrolled sociopath who learn s technique of perfuming. The merchant trader in gras played by Alan Rickman is good but the character is nothing new of Alan Rickman is good but the character is nothing new of Alan rickman but ads to the suspense of the story as he if father of one of th emost beautiful girl who has the most beautiful girl who has the most exclusive scent. |
