The hunger games is a film adapted from the book of the same name written by Suzanne Collins. It Stars Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence. The film is set in Panem the futuristic 'America and is shown after two men talk about the Hunger games. The Panem they show is district 12 the last of the 12 districts and from that showing you could see the hunger and poverty of it's citizens. The shallow dwellings, the broken houses and the torn clothes as it shows the people who live there. When you see the capitol later in the film it is a direct contrast to District 12 as the structures are refined, wide glamorous and beautiful and also made out of metal where district 12 homes were made out of wood. The characters are also very good. Jennifer Lawrence does well acting Katniss Everdeen who is tough and a good archer. We see this many times in the film. One memorable time is when during her meeting with the sponsors she shoots arrow William Tell style at the mouth of a pig holding apple to get the sponsors attention. The pig represents them taking the wealth of land. Another is a scene where during the games she spots hoard of food and supplies and decides to destroy. She shoots two arrows at a bag of apples which sets off the explosives which were supposed to guard the hoard but instead blows it up. I also like how they explain how Katniss' father died. They show that through her hallucinations after she gets stung by genetically altered wasps called tracker-jackers. She is dreary and goes off balance and falls down she then starts dreaming about her parents and sister and last words they said to her. It is at that point that we learn that her father died in a mining accident. This information allows us to care more about Katniss and why the first time you see her she is hunting deer. Katniss is doing that because she has taken over her father's responsibilities which is to care for the family by bringing food to the table. This information also makes us worry for her situation as she is on the ground and is prey for any of the Tributes. Her care for people on the other hand does not stop at her family but stretches to Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Rue (Amandla Stenberg) which makes her the prime focus of the film. Peeta Mellark is the strong sensitive tribute in the games and is shown by him declaring his love for Katniss on live tv and by lifting a huge kettle ball and throwing it at a box of spears. This also means he is capable of bottling things up for long periods of time or is he trying to sell something to the audience. I mentioned this because at their arrival in their chariot Peeta tries to hold Katniss' hand and when she hesitates he says the crowd will love it. He is also crafty with camouflage where he pencils his hand to blend into the background of the training gym. Not much else is shown about Peeta except a scene where he is giving burnt bread out to the pigs and to Katniss who was sitting there near woods. This shows he is not selfish and is willing to give to others less fortunate. We are told this is the first time he saw her. During the games we see him with a group who are trying to track Katniss down and kill her. This shows he is capable of dealing with bad groups to survive and makes the viewer worry for his safety especially when they say they will kill him once he leads them to Katniss. The plot is that 74 years ago there was a rebellion by the 12 districts against capitol rule which was squashed. As a result there is annual games is run where 12 districts choose a boy and a girl to fight to the death to become the victor of the games. The atmosphere and show is like reality tv shows and one cant help to think if Suzanne Collins who helped write the script is blatantly satirising the whole culture. For example The game creator Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) and the tv host Ceasar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci) and dressed up so flamboyantly are mere puppets to Donald Sutherland's President Snow who wields the real power behind the scenes. Also you get to see the Games maker's workers put obstacles in the way of the tributes which is what the contestants are called to make the game more exciting. Reality television has been accused of doing this and more. Overall The hunger games is an exciting and thrilling film to watch with loads of suspense. |
