The cabin in the woods is a horror film that makes fun of it self like scream did . It features a bunch of college kids who for a weekend break decide to go to a remote cabin in the woods. The warning signs are there about the cabin which are the red-neck owner of a petrol station telling them when they ask for directions he can get them there but getting back is their own concern. For the audience the bird smashing into an invisible wall is a reminder for later on in the film when the group try to escape. The setting starts of with light afternoon suggesting fun is going to be had with only the title detailing others wise. The title is written in blood red and is splattered across the screen. When you see the house it is night and house looks uninviting which sets ups for the later bloody and horrific scenes of the film. Throughout the film its cuts from goings on of the cabin to a facility that we then learn has hooked up the cabin with cameras and is actively controlling the behaviour of the college kids. For example they changed one of the girls into a slut by contaminating her hair dye. This is also where the film gets to make fun of it as the facility is where they keep all the monsters which is revealed towards the end of the film. And there is a running bet on what the kids will summon to kill them. The scientists talk about horror genre when commentating on what the kids are doing. In one particular conversation they explain the different types of characters that are in a horror film. There is the jock, the slut, the fool and the virgin and the virgin is killed last. The use of space in the film is very good as in cellar they manage to create claustrophobic atmosphere when the kids are there playing with dangerous items. This is a sign that they are playing with their lives. The characters are good but not perfect you do emphasise with the characters and want them to survive. Anna Hutchison's Jules is good from changing into a slut from an average girl and I liked the scene where she makes out with a stuffed head of a wolf. Dana who is supposed to be the virgin of the group is acted well by Kristen Connolly who makes the audience feel sorry for her whenever she gets attacked. Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins are good as the two scientists who are in charge of making sure everything goes to plan but also comment on the situation of the college kids. For example they create pheromones in the woods as well as change the temperature to make it the ideal for the jock and slut to have sex in the woods. Overall the cabin in the woods is a film with a twist which makes it very exciting to watch. |
