Seeking a friend for the end of the world stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightley.Steve Carel plays a insurance seller called Dodge Petersen who's wife has left him after they heard from the radio that earth was going to be destroyed by a meteorite called Matilda. The first part of the film depicts Dodges miserable existence showing where he works telling the audience that he has a boring life. At a dinner party that Dodge attends this is reiterated as one of his friends tells Dodge that his wife was bored and was surprised that she did not leave him sooner. After depicting Dodge's life the film. The second part picks itself up from the rut it started with by introducing two new characters to Dodge's life a small cute dog called Sorry and Keira Knightley's Penny Lockhart. Dodge gets dog Sorry after trying to commit suicide by drinking window cleaner. It is left to him while he was lying in the park. Dodge takes a shine to the dog and brings him home to look after. However what really lifts the mood of the film is the introduction of Penny Lockhart who we find sitting on fire escape beside Dodges window crying after having dumped her boyfriend Owen a bearded Adam Brody. After a while she falls asleep on Dodges couch then wakes up and goes to her apartment. She then sees him in the hallway and gives him a pile of his letters that got accidentally sent to him . After reading one of them he becomes angry as this was dated a few months ago and was by his ex-girlfriend who he loves and was thinking of her before he saw Penny. This plot development is created to get both of them on the road together. As Penny says sorry for “ruining his life” and decides to help find his lost love. Dodge on the other hand decides if she is willing to do that he will help her go to England to see her family again. This is where the film gets interesting as they meet lots of interesting people like William Petersen's trucker who has hired a hit-man to kill him. During the meeting Petersen's character mistakes Penny and Dodge for his assassins. Another good moment in the film is when they stop to eat at a restaurant called Friendseys where everyone is nice and accommodating to you. At one point during the meal Penny blurts out that its Dodges Birthday. This brings their waitress to be over friendly which includes a kiss on lips to both Dodge and Penny. Another interesting person they met is Penny's ex-boyfriend Speck a survivalist who is building a titanium bunker to start a new world order. So throughout the road trip Dodge and Penny through meeting different people find out who they really deeply want to spend time with when the world comes to end and its each other. So overall the film starts melancholy like Lars Vons Trier's Melancholia but ends with a high. |
