Sing Street is about a 14 year old boy called Connor in 1985 Ireland who starts a band to impress a girl. The film starts with a looks at Connor's life. He is there in his room writing down song lyrics while his parents are arguing. This will be a common feature in the film as when his parents are arguing he will seek solace in his room or brother's but more on that later. It turns out that a big life changing decision has happened to Connor. His parents are broke so he can not go to public school any-more, has to go to state school. His school is a bit run down and takes a lot of getting use too, but luckily he has found something that can get him through the day. He sees a girl sitting on the steps of house next to his school. He drums up the nerve to go and talk to her and finds out she an aspiring model her name is Raphina. He asks her if she wants to star in his music video for his band. Truth is he does not have a band yet and only said that to impress and impress her he does. She agrees to star in his videos. Now all he has to do is create a band. There is no panicking while he does that he just talks to one of his friends to help him find band members. The music they make is inspired by how Connor feels or Cosmo as Raphina starts calling him. Their first song called Riddle of the Model is about his muse Raphina, though when asked directly by Raphina if it is about her he lies and says it about another model he knows. Throughout the film when ever Connor is having any difficulty about things like music he turns to his brother Brendan. Who schools him on what he needs to know about music. For example when he talks to Brendan about not knowing how to play a music instrument. Brendan tells him it does not matter and references the sex pistols did not know how to play there instruments. The band is called Sing Street and is called that to reference the school they come from Synge Street CBS. The acting is quite good. Ferdia Waslh-Peelo does an excellent job playing Connor. One of my favourite scenes is when Connor walks into school with make up and dyed hair. He was told to go and see the headmaster. Where he calmly explains that he saw no rules in the rule book of not having dyed hair or make-up. The headmaster tells him to take make-up of. Connor says no and walks out of the headmaster's office without being dismissed. Minutes later the headmaster grabs Connor drags him to the toilets and throws his head into the sink with running water on, trying to clean up the make-up of his face and the dye from his hair. He then leaves him on the floor. This had no effect on Connor and he still wore make-up on his face and dye on his hair. Connor showed perseverance. Lucy Boynton was good as Raphina the girl of Connor's affections. She made it believable that Connor could fall for her. One of her best moments was when they were filming the music video for Beautiful Sea. She is strutting across the pavement holding a frame. She then places the frame on the floor and jumps into the sea. She then calls out to everyone saying she can't swim. Connor jumps into the water and saves her. He then asks her why did that. She answers for our art and that you could never do things by halves. I thought that scene was splendid. |
