Filth is a double entendre or triple entendre film that deals with police and how they do things whilst the main character bathes himself in what most people call pornographic or filth. The plot centres round the character Bruce a Detective Sargent who is waiting in line with other cronies to get the promotion of detective inspector. Now Bruce is like any other eager person and will not follow the rules but if any of you have seen the original UK television show House of Cards I will tell you that he acts like Francis Urquhart with a lot of shenanigans. Like bullying one of his contenders by suggesting he is gay buy writing he socks cock on a toilet seat. Others include trying to humiliate another contender by putting him humiliating circumstances like threesomes to build a friendship so he could later deceive him. All of this is built on from experience which I will get back too later. One of the things that is good about the film is that it works like a Greek tragedy as it has a chorus both singing and talking. They predict and second guess the events for example when he gets high his psychiatrist pops in to his head starts questioning whether seeing things properly. One of my best scenes is during the moment he is high he starts acting like Dr Strange Love in the film or the longer title How I stop worrying and love the bomb and given title Bruce has stop worrying about taking his medication given his mental state which I will explain later and has started taking drugs. So the scene is basically saying that he has stop worrying about the side effects of stopping medicine without proper managing his mental health state which makes the viewer question why this has happened. This of course means you can call into question his methods as since his mind his corrupted his methods for dealing with life are corrupted which is true because he is a corrupt cop as while questioning a female suspect he actually forces her to give him a blow job. He then comes out while the suspect is being questioned by Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell). So How does this lead to Bruce being beat up? While he is coming out of the room to see the suspect he is in the middle of the doing up his belt. He does this to intimidate the suspect which works but not in his favour as he gets tied up in a chair and is beaten senseless. This is one of the reasons while Bruce's actions does not help his endeavours. He never gets the promotion so he hangs himself. James Macvoy does well portraying Bruce as a typical sleaze and trickster. I have not seen that type of character since the 1st series of Shameless. He is also producing which I will get back to later. His cheekiness and his illusive projection of himself is what he does to succeed in life. Ray Lennox is the baby in film he is impressionable but at first glance is not bright enough see through Bruce's tricks. Amanda Drummond is a stiff and rigid character that loved playing psychology with Bruce as Bruce is suffering from Schizophrenia and possibly depression as he lost his wife and child and has been hiding it ever since. Overall the film explains that a lot of the attitudes that you see in life were worked on during childhood and none of those characters I have mentioned just came up with it quickly. The film can also been a reply from James MacAvoy of why he left Shameless which was only worth watching because of him and the series suffered from it. |
