2001: A Space Odyssey

Rush is an in depth look into competitive sports it highs its lows and how it effects people. Rush focuses on formula racing circuit where starts by introducing the typical characters and people in formula racing. The film describes them as children of rich business men and politicians with no formal skill or training to further their parents interest. Rush Depicts typical people in racing by showing them at home explaining who there parents are and presenting how they act at home around friends and in public. This done by close ups of their friends and themselves for example one of the focuses in Rush is the rivalry between England formula car Racer James Hunt and Austrian formula car racer Nikki Lauder. The film shows James Hunt around his friend and financier it depicts him as a playboy which is what Nikki Lauder's father said is one of the people who competes in the sport and was probably hinting can win. The film depicts James Hunt as playboy in many scenes but here is one example. When James Hunt is in the garage he sees a female friend of his financier and immediately gets to talking to her and soon they are married. However a better scene shows this is in the beginning when Hunt is in hospital after being hit by a crowbar. The camera suddenly becomes his eyes as a female nurse comes in and trajectory of the camera looks down at the nurse's legs while she walks in and up at her waist and suddenly after a few words they are having sex.

On the other hand Rush depicts James Hunt's rival as a tactician and handler. The film does this in many scenes like the first James Hunt and Nikki Lauder race in Formula 2 James cuts Nikki off and they spin out of control and both engines stop. James starts his engine off quicker and finishes. Nikki after the race complains to James about saying that he had that curve and if he had not stop they would both be dead. A better scene that shows off that statement is the argument with the ferrari mechanics. He starts telling them how to make his car faster and then tells the owner to put his no 1 driver in his car and says but is seen as boasts that he would be 2 seconds faster but that actually happens.

Ronald Howard makes this film a must see by making us experience what is like being a spectator a helper and driver in formula one driving. For examples in all the races he shows back of car where you can see the engine, side way views of the car, a bird's eye of view of track a first person view of what driver sees when driving. This makes us interact with the characters in the film and support either James Hunt of Nikki Lauder.

On the other hand Ron Howard does not just shows us how the driver lives during the racing circuit he cuts to their family and friends lives and the media when they drum up the anticipation. James Hunt shows us the typical groupie hang on to his fame. While Nikki Lauder can show how lonely and boring it is if you are not liked.

However one thing that comes to mind is how Ron Howard chose his subjects for Rush. James Hunt Formula 1 driver for Mclaren and Nikki Lauder driver for Ferrari. Just by names alone you could see the Mclaren show you what is like to live for the drive which is why James Hunt fits being the driver for Mclaren. One scene that emphasises it James Hunt telling Nikki how lovely it is to live for the drive and to put life on the line and cheat death. Ferrari could represent the fury for example after Nikki Lauder's disastrous' crash on 1 August 1976 where he was bedridden in hospital for at least months. You could see Nikki watching the formula one on television and the effect it was having on him. The effect was it made him want to recover faster and get back into the drivers seat.

The acting of two rivals is superb. Chris Hemsworth really does present the live or die on track attitude in James Hunt whether the real life person was exactly like that or not. When he chats up a nurse in the first scene to have sex you could believe that racing drivers could be like that and even it they are not the film is better because of it. The Austrian driver presented as a technical manipulator makes it easy for the audience and the film to bounce of their rivalry. During the film I was waiting for there next match or trying to compare each others social lives. The characters James Hunt and Nikki Lauder remind me of Maverick and Iceman in Top Gun where one plays against other reactions but parties hard the other is sticking to rules and tactics but gets an early night in.

Overall Rush is an exhilarating film about formula 1 racing with enough drama and suspense to keep you entertain. It also gives an insight into competitive sport it strengths its weakness and how people react to it.
