The plot is a bunch a guys set about a deal with the Cartels to help sell drugs in America but the deal goes wrong and the Cartels all turn on the bunch of guys. Now Michael Fassbender is the Counsellor he is the lawyer that meets with Reiner to do an illegal deal. To picture this the Counsellor is in a suit and tie whilst Reiner is wearing colourful clothes. This contrast is continuously played during the film. For example when Counsellor meets Brad Pitt's character Westray he is again overdress as Westray is wearing a big round hat and his suit is quite laid back and he is not wearing a tie. This gives us the hint that Michael Fassbender's character does not understand the country or what his getting into. So twice in the film Counsellor to stay away from the deal but as we hear from his telephone conversation with Reiner he has money problems. So greed is driving him in the film. Laura who is played by Penelope Cruz is the Counsellor's love interest who also during the film becomes his fiancé however they never get to marry and here is why. Laura is innocent of the deal he is doing with Reiner and the Cartels but it is her life that is forfeited instead of counsellor. Now the way she will die is foretold in the Counsellor's meeting with Westray. Now Westray is telling a cautionary tale of what could happen it deals becomes bad. During the conversation he asks even he has ever seen a snuff film. The Counsellor says no and he says that seeing a snuff film makes you an accessory to murder. This was after he may a detailed description of a video showing a Cartel man fucking a teenage girl after decapitating her head So fast forwarding the film to where The Counsellor is sitting in a Mexican motel scared that he would not see his fiancé again. A boy comes to his door and leaves a package. The Counsellor opens it and sees it is a DVD and falls down crying knowing for sure his fiancé is dead. After about half hour after the scene with Counsellor and the dvd we see a bulldozer with a load of rubbish which it dumps in the sad and while the rubbish is falling we a body fall down with it and it is the headless body of Laura the Counsellor's fiancée. These scenes tells us how dangerous it is to screw up a drug deal with the Cartel. Also when he Counsellor is walking through the street he sees a petition by a number of women appalled of the death happens in the street. This tells audience that the Counsellor is only just starting to realise the danger he is in and he is realising it too late. The deal goes wrong because Reiner's girlfriend Malkina played by Cameron Diaz double crosses him. Now Malkina is played at first like a harmless party girl as she see lying on a folding chair on a Texan sunset. But before that she riding a horse watching leopards chase and kill a rabbit and is a strong image that the film The Counsellor is projecting of Malkina and in a broader sense the situation the Counsellor is in. Malkina is described by her boyfriend Reiner as a scary person. When the Counsellor asks if he understood what the screens were showing which where markets and how much they going up or down he said he understood some but if he ask Malkina for help she could explain all. Other scenes that explain Malkina's character is when Laura joins Malkina at the pool where Malkina catches Laura engagement ring and within a few minutes she has the ring in her hands. She is then able to calculate type of diamond it is and many carrots is nearly precise to what the diamond merchant told the Counsellor when he visited his store in Amsterdam to purchase an engagement ring. On the other hand that is not only thing you can learn from that scene about Malkina. The quickness she got the engagement ring shows she is a shrewd businesswoman and is later a statement of her intent and agenda. This is later prove by a conversation she has by radio to a bunch of thugs who she has tipped off to steal a containment of drugs by following a motorcycle driver who which truck hides drugs as he also works for hotel. One of things that is good about the film is that a lot of things connect as well as the predictions of how people will die come true. So on everything connects the motorcycle driver who Malkina gets two thugs to follow is the son of one of the Counsellor's clients who she asks to get that exact person out of jail for speeding. So when he ends up dead and a device that he had hidden is stolen. The Cartels turn to him saying they had lost 20 million. Your image and how you project yourself is the main thing that drives The Counsellor.
