Total Recall stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel. The plot is that Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) is a factory worker and a married man who has recurring dreams of what we later learn is a past life. This then leads him to Rekall a company that can turn your dreams into memories. However there is a problem with the operation. The police are called in and instead of handing himself in he shoots his way out of there. He returns home finds out his wife is in cahoots with the police run by chancellor Cohaagen. Teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica biel) to find the head of the underground resistance and stop Cohaagen. The film runs like a mixture of the Bourne identity and Stars Wars. I say Bourne identity because after the climax of the shooting at Rekall office. Douglas is struggling to find out who he is and how he manages to take 10 police officers. He also finds out he has a safety deposit box in a bank which contains money, passports and a gun. I say Star Wars because the police he battles at the Rekall office are armoured like Darth Vader's storm troopers. However this does not mean it is a winning combination as the story and plot is poor as there is no plot development just twists in the story. There is no character development so we don't feel anything for Douglas Quaid when we found out his life has been played with. What was done well was the visual effects of the United Federation of Britain (UFB) and the colony. The latter beautifully shown during a chase scene with Douglas Quaid against his wife Lori. The difference between UFB and the colony is that UFB is a metropolis with tall skyscrapers whilst the colony is a basically a shanty town. Overall the visuals and special effects alone could not make it an enjoyable film. |
