The Hateful Eight

Go to Film reviews go to Home page	The Hateful Eight is the eight film by Quentin Taratino. It tells the story of eight people staying in a cabin to avoid a blizzard. What happens is there is that three of the eight people staying in the cabin called Minnie's Haberdashery are there to free woman about to be taken to Red Rock for hanging. The person taking that woman is John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and the woman is Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The first time you see John Ruth and Daisy is in a stage coach on the way to Red Rock. Before the reach Minnie's Haberdashery they pick up two people. A black bounty hunter called Marquis Warren ( Samuel L. Jackson) and the new sheriff of Red Rock Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins). Now what is interesting about the story is three of eight people lie about who they are to John, Daisy, Chris and Marquis. Now during the time John's stage coach reaches Minnie's Haberdashery Quentin Taratino has managed to get you to care about the characters. So when you find out that some of the things the characters said on the way to the Haberdashery is a lie you feel hurt. The lie was about the lincoln Letter. This letter was addressed to Marquis Warren from Abraham Lincoln. This letter got quite famous and some of the other people in Haberdashery heard of it. However we learn after an hour or so that the letter was a fake. Marquis used it in his own words “to disarm white folks”. This gets you thinking if that was a lie what else is. This is when start you looking at the people in the Haberdashery to see if they are lying. This gets us back to the three people waiting in the Haberdashery to free daisy. As I have told you they lied to John, Marquis and Chris. They said there names were Bob the mexican, hangman Oswaldo Mobray and cowpoke Joe Gage. They are actually part of the Domergue gang and have bounties on their head. This brings us to why John Ruth has captured Daisy Domergue. Most of the 2 hrs 47mins is spent talking and there is only a little bit of action and with that it gets quite bloody and graphic. The film is done in chapters and there is an intermission half-way through. Most of the film is set in a small cabin called Minnie's Haberdashery with only a small part be set outside. The film is set a few years after the civil war in Wyoming. Most of the cinematic outside shots just tells us that there is a blizzard coming and that it is freezing cold. A lot of the talk is about what people did during the civil war. Overall The Hateful Eight is an enjoyable film. Even though it is a long film the atmosphere and ambience of the film help you to endure it. The acting is good as well. Samuel L Jackson makes you care about his character Marquis Warren as well does Kurt Russell for John Ruth. Jennifer Jason Leigh is also quite good as well as Daisy Domergue. Although she does not say much , you still want to know what happens to her.
