Star Trek Beyond opens with James T Kirk(Chris Pine) doing a diplomatic mission to end a war between Teenaxi delegation and the Fabona Republic. He is given by one of them part of a weapon to give to the other in a sign of peace which we learn later if put together becomes a devastating weapon. The weapon is being sort out by Krall(Idris Elba) who is a former Star Trek captain. He wants to destroy the Federation because before the Federation there used to be an Earth Alliance were he was a soldier. He wants to get back to those days as the Federation does not have a military. Kirk's diplomatic mission ended in a failure and he had to be beamed up to Star Trek Enterprise. After that Kirk thinks of stepping down from being captain of the Star Trek Enterprise. So throughout the film I think there is a theme about change and how it effects you and how you deal with it. For example Kirk who I mentioned earlier wants to be a high admiral as he has not been enjoying his time as captain of the Star Trek Enterprise. He feels that days are being episodic and he is having trouble noticing when days end and days start. Other examples that show that the main theme in Star Trek Beyond is change is the situation with Spock(Zachary Quinto). When on shore leave he gets news that Commander Spock has died and this greatly affects him. We learn when they crash land on planet that Spock wants to leave the enterprise and the continue the work of Commander Spock. The crash I will explain later. Krall which I have explained in detail earlier is also evidence that Star Trek beyond main theme is about change, how it effects you and how you deal with it. The plot is the Federation is tricked into sending a star-fleet in to deep space to look for crew of a missing ship from a distress call. During that trip they get attacked by Krall and the Star Trek Enterprise engines are torn apart. The ship crashes on an unknown planet some of the crew escape and land on the same planet. During the attack some of the crew die while the rest are captured and held on the same planet. Captain Kirk, Montgomery Scott(Simon Pegg), the doctor Bones(Karl Urban), Spock and Chekov(Anton Yelchin) are the only ones that escape but they are seperated. Jaylah(Sofia Boutella) rescues Montgomery found bounty hunters and on a deal that she help find the rest of his crew he will fix her ship which is from the Federation called the Franklin which was Krall's ship a hundred years ago. I will explain how Krall is still living later. Jaylah has made the Franklin her home. Kirk convinces Jaylah to help rescue there crew from Krall compound. They then have to stop Krall from using the complete weapon which he manage to acquire from destroying the Federation. The acting is quite good. Chris Pine does well playing Captain James T Kirk from showing how tired he is during the beginning of the film of being in his third year of a five mission in deep space. To finding excitement when he races to be a distraction for rescuing his crew mates on old motorcycle. That scene is fun you could see him jumping up and down on his motorcycle, swerving as dodges shots from the enemy. He makes even more complicated for the enemy by using a device that shoots hologram illusions of himself. Jaylah is a good character, Sofia Boutella does great playing her. She is strong and feisty as we see when she saves Montgomery Scott from a bunch of alien bounty hunters. However she is quite rude and direct and does not have the knowledge of social graces which is quite fun to watch. Spock is quite good as well he is Kirk's right hand man and it was good pondering whether Spock was going to leave Kirk's side. The doctor Bones was good, there was a bit of camaraderie with Spock as they both crashed on the planet in the pod with Bones having to attend to Spock's injury which he received during the crash landing. His outcries of “my God” is quite annoying when he sees or hears anything astonishing. Krall is a good baddie, Idris Elba did well portraying him. When I was watching him I could tell even with all the make-up on him that he was a famous black actor but I could not place who it was. I only realised when he reveal his original form nearly at the end of the film. Krall has a commanding presence and he is quite scary. Especially in a scene up-close with Lieutenant Uhura(Zoe Saldana). Where Uhura says “Our Captain will save us. Mercy will be the last thing on his mind.” Krall replies “I am counting on it, Lieutenant Uhura”. That scene was even used in the trailers. Krall's back story is believable. A soldier in the Earth Alliance who has fought many wars. Peace comes. The Federation is made and he is given a place as a captain on the Star Trek Franklin and he feels redundant does like this new world and wishes for the old one where he had purpose. One of things that was amazing about Krall is how he survived for hundred years. He basically sucks life out of his victims to extend his life. Chekhov (Anton Yelchin) is good he gives a balance to the Enterprise team when ever he is helping out on ship by reporting what can and can't be done. Though his voice is a little bit annoying I will miss Anton, rest in peace Anton Yelchin. The visuals were quite good. I like how they showed Krall's attack which was a squadron of space ships acting and working together like a swarm of bees. It was just spectacular. The way the ships attacked was that each ship will do a small amount of damage and since there were more than ten ships in the swarm they will do a considerable amount of damage. For example when Krall's squadron attacked the Star Trek Enterprise it chipped away at it's engines and in minutes it had disconnected the engines from the rest of ship. This caused the Star Trek Enterprise to crash into a nearby planet. Another thing that was great about visuals was the planet the Enterprise had crashed into. It was nice and rocky. It has a beautiful landscape with some trees. Overall Star Trek Beyond is an interesting and exciting film. It is over 2 hours long and I never felt bored during the entire film. |
