All is Lost stars Robert Redford and focuses all its attention on Robert Redford's character's survival at sea. There is hardly any talking in All is Lost as it concentrates on Physical aspect of Our Man which is what Robert Redford's character is billed in the end credits. The tempo and rhythm of the film is what strives in All is lost. For example the smashing water in to Our Man's Boat and how over time it effected Our Man's character and will. His expression of anger when things do not work allow the audience to feel his pain.

The film All is Lost shows Our Man's focus and concentration go up and down in the film. At the beginning of the film Robert Redford's character is focused. When Robert Redford sees that his boat is being flooded with water he immediately acts by trying to find what caused this situation. When he figured out it was caused by a crate he set about trying to remedy the situation. However as his plight lengthens he starts to get fatigue which effects he concentration and focus. When he tries to set out a SOS call by radio he checks the radio and starts to clean it by water after taking it apart and then put is back to together. Nothing stopped him in completing his task.

However after a hard days work he does forget about other essential things like food. Now the film does show him eating food but he does miss the fishes until too late. Twice the camera shows a bottom view of where he is and fishes swim past him and his oblivious to it. This shows that Robert Redford's character has a problem with is priority in the film. It is all good keeping the boat afloat but if you do not eat you will die. The film shows Robert Redford eating after doing work and he had not set any time to prepare for the food or check it. This meant when camera shines on Robert Redford eating he had a difficult time enjoying the food. His expression which was brightly shown and gave the audience the thought that it was sour. Also the water was undrinkable. Twice he had drank from the large water bottle and he spat it out. Another scene I will depict shows us more how he prioritise things. When he has gone down to the lower decks of boats and the place is flooded. He is knocked unconscious. However he does not treat his wound to the head until it starts to bother him. This supports the early point he has problem with priority. Later during Our Man's torment when he is in the life craft he manages to set fire to his raft. He does this because was trying to make a signal by burning loads of paper and other junk. Robert Redford's character focused too much on making the fire burn brighter. That he forgot about the fire getting out of control and was not watching it to see if it will spread. Robert's character also forgot to set a limit to how much fuel he will give to the fire. This lack of planning nearly cost him his lost. The fire got out of control and he was knock out of life raft and into the water. Robert Redford's character was there in water out cold for what it felt like minutes. He only rose up when he saw or felt or passing boat come across. He swims to the boat and the person operating grabs his hand and that is the end of the film.

Robert Redford's character is shown to be easily frustrated. When he tries signal a ship using a flare even though the ship tower above him and would never see him. He immediately feels down and depressed. This effects his survival because he forgets the fishes swimming underneath his both. Also the way he projects himself in yacht while in the ocean effects how his perseverance. For example when calls the radio after he has heard people talking his voice is not powerful but depressing which diminishes his chances of any one answering back to his SOS call. This is what I think J C Chandor's film is trying to present and explain. When he walks around the yacht he is posture is defeatist. He never smiles and just carries on with the job with no sense of duty just a monotonic I must do this or die. This produces no pleasure in what he does but that does not stop the audience from not caring. The audience is worrying to the edge of their seat.

The yacht plays an important role in All is lost. The yacht is shown to have life even when water is starting to flood it. You would still want to use the yacht. It also makes our man strong and resilient. When he fixes the Yacht by moving the crate that bashed it and then plugs something in to close hole. You still feel that he not wasting his time trying to fix the boat because boat looks savable. The colour was still there. The overall look was good, wood work was good a sailor could appreciate his taste in boats. However during the many of days winds and waves the boats sturdiness and usability diminishes in time. The colour fades , the woodwork begins to feel old and weak. This reflects on Robert Redford's character. When the colour faded in his boat so did the colour fade in his clothes. When the wood work started looking old and weak Robert's character started looking sluggish.

This shows that imagery is very important in the structure of the film. For example the fish swimming underneath shows that things are fine and there is nothing to worry. But when Our Man catches a fish and a shark comes that shows that he is now in a dangerous position and there is not just one shark. After a shark catches his fish. Chandor then shows a top down of where his life raft is and there are sharks circling around it. The common law of sharks is they come in when they smell blood. So basically the showing of sharks around the lifeboat present that he is wounded. This is not the only example of imagery in the film.

All is lost presents us a man as strong and resilient as his boat. It shows us there is a connection between him and his yacht and so when the boat suffers he does and when he suffers so does the yacht. It also show that his demeanour and way he looks and plans things effect his surroundings that include his yacht. So the film is trying to show that the way you present yourself will effects how you are treated by anything even the sea.
