London Film Festival has been going on for 57 years and what is not known is that there have been some themes. The 57th themes is centred on how we treat people and objects. The reason I believe the theme is on treatment on people and objects is because of the titles of the films and the plot. For example the opening gala is called Captain Philips. This film is about Richard Philips terrible ordeal with Somalian pirates. However that only skims the surface when trying to define the meaning of the film. This is because when director Paul Greengrass shows us Richard telephoning for help because he was about to get hijacked by pirates their response was to go through the standard drill because his enemy was fisherman and they were not a serious threat. The film is telling us that western mariners treat the somalia like riff raft. A scene that helps present this view is when Captain Philips goes through the first part of his training against hijacking, which is turning on the hoses against the Somalian pirates. This makes it difficut for the somolian pirates to board the ship. However if you look at my arguments of the film Captain Philips you would think that only Richard Philips and his crew were the ones underestimating the pirates. This is not true because Somalian pirates underestimate Captain Philips and his crew. For example when they board they forget that they do not know this ship at all and need to be guided by Philips and his crew. This is a recipe for disaster and the film shows it. His crew were able to disorientate the pirates and plays tricks on them. One of the tricks was turning off the lights. This made misleading the pirates very easy. They also use radio to indicate what the pirates wearing and manage to set a trap. The trap was to leave glass near door of the engine room as one of th pirates was bare footed. This injured him. One of the main arguments Pirates had for hijacking was that the Americans ships came into their waters and took their fish. This was said by Muse the captain of the hijackers. Captain philips retorted that is was international waters. This shows that the Americans disprect Somalia and do not treat them properly which supports my theory. Another film that support my theory is the 3d animation Foosball which focuses on treatment in children and how it grows when they get older. The films storyline is about a kid trying to save his town from being redevelopment. However what is astonishing about this film is that a lot of character development seen is on the animated table football players that come to life to help the kid. One scene that promotes this view is when the blue side of the table football players alow the red side to join them on their quest to find the rest their players. Other scenes that shows their character development is the captain of the blue team starting to realise he is not the most important player in the team which was when the team member he was arguing get kidnapped by a rat. Both of those scenes that I have mentioned look how people who support different things or have different occupations treat people who are different. Also the Film shows how redevelopment for a city can be started. It can all start with one person who had disagreement with someone and a developer or manager uses that to exploit him and the town. 12 years of slave looks at treatment of servants and the scars of ex servants and how work is distributed. So a question to ponder is how profitable is Slavery? The film shows slave owners massive amounts of land which makes you believe that they are quite rich and prosperous but at the end you see they are in debt as Chiwetel Ejoifor's character is told to get some food and the maid of the house said she would put it on her tab. This is after he got sold to another slave farm because he got into a fight with one of the slave drivers. Don John looks at peoples expectations and predictions of how other people act and what really happens. To explain further it looks at romantic films and pornography and how what is shown in those films is then expected in people's real life relationships. For example the main character Jon is a porn addict but is not really the typical Porn addict as he is a body builder and still has sex with woman and is sociable with his male friends. The film makes fun of stereotypical romantic and pornographic films. The last film that proves my point is the documentary film Ukraine is not a Brothel which of course looks at how countries project themselves to the outside world. . So its main focus is on the how the outside world sees the Ukraine , especially the women and they see them as cheap sex slaves. So the film follows a group of girls in their struggle to change male dominated society through shock and awe in the Ukraine. The shock and awe tactics they use would be going topless and shouting slogans at people as wells as blocking entrances to shops and other places. It fits into my theory because it makes us think how countries are presented and how it affects people job aspects and social lives within that country. So these are some of the films that I have seen during the 57th London film festival and why I think the whole festival's theme is treatment of people. |
